Reclaiming your Closet

The start of a new year often gives me a boost of motivation to reclaim different parts of my life.

Whether that involves readjusting my weekly schedule so that I can squeeze in a bit more “me time” or decluttering and reorganizing parts of my home, being able to reclaim my space in different areas of my life always feels liberating and refreshing!

This year, I want to reclaim my closet space. I’ve felt a lot of joy adding colorful pieces to my wardrobe since getting my consult done, but my joy can easily fade when I can’t find what I’m looking for. Sometimes, I accidentally buy something similar to what I already own because my closet isn’t in a state that makes it easy for me to take inventory of what I have.

If you’ve also been wanting to reorganize your closet this year, we put together today’s post to serve as an encouragement to you!

Some of our Created Colorful team members banded together to share our organization journeys that have helped spark our love for our closets and the way we approach getting dressed.

This is not a post on how to make your closet Pinterest-perfect. These are REAL CLOSETS of women in different life phases, with differing amounts of space and different needs. We hope this post will give you the extra dose of motivation needed to reclaim your closet space (whatever that means to you).

You can see our team members’ closet photos below, as well as read their thoughts and tips. We linked similar items to what they used under each photo gallery, and we also linked extra items at the bottom of this post and organized them by category for you!

Cheers to a new year and to reclaiming our closet space. We got this!

Things I love about my closet: all the matching felt hangers, designated shoe racks, and soft-close drawers if you don’t have enough dresser space! The bins are from Amazon, and they store items that we don’t use every day. I love a space to hang my necklaces, and everything is arranged by color (ROYGBV) so that items are easy to find. As much as I LOVE my closet, it took 36 years to have a custom one. In our previous homes, simple things like editing, matching hangers, and organizing your clothes by color can make a big impact!

Moving to an apartment with very little storage has made me get creative when it comes to my closet. My clothing rack is not only functional (I need the hanging space), but has become a treasured focal point of my office. Seeing my most-loved pieces every day, I am inspired to keep building a closet I really love.

Now my actual 3-foot closet, is a work in progress. I’m using a shoe rack, baskets, and acrylic shelves to get the most out of the space I do have.

I store off-season items under my bed in these glorious foldable storage bins from Amazon. They have a clear front panel so I can see what’s inside, they’re stackable, and I can unzip them from the top or the front if I need to grab just one item.

To be honest, I haven’t upgraded or changed my closet since the day we moved in to our house, almost 9 years ago. Ha! What you see is the original closet design of the previous owner - it’s as simple as it gets! My closet came with the two shelves on top and a single wooden rod that extended across. I bought baskets from Target to store my accessories and seasonal wear on top. The plastic baskets below the hanging shelves contain my pajamas and loungewear. Believe it or not, my hanging shelves are over 15 years old! I keep my sweaters and tops there. For blouses and jackets, I like hanging them up and organizing them by color. I also added a rod attachment so that I can hang my pants. I like being able to see everything, all at once. This is definitely not a Pinterest-worthy closet, lol, but it’s doing its job and hasn’t collapsed…. yet!

I never feel overwhelmed anymore when I get dressed. I like that it’s easy to see all my options! I organized my clothes in a color gradient, and eliminating visual clutter let’s me be inspired rather than exhausted by the idea of picking out an outfit. The bins up on top are from Target and hold my seasonal stuff, like bathing suits and snow gears. Everything else is from IKEA!

I mostly installed these Closet Maid units all by myself after we moved into our current house a couple years ago! My dad just helped by cutting a shelf to lay across the top for me and adding some wood panels for some of the rods to secure to. Probably a silly favorite thing is a couple packs of silver hooks I bought from Target. I installed about 6 in various spots and they hold things we reach for often!

I love that I have space to be able to organize by style of clothing and season (long sleeve & short sleeve super casual clothing sections and then long sleeve & short sleeve nicer clothing sections). I also love stepping into my closet and seeing such a gorgeous rainbow of Clear Spring colors every morning — it makes me so happy!

I will be the first to acknowledge that my closet hasn’t reached Clear Spring perfection, but the way I have organized my closet brings me a lot of joy. I know I’ll love it even more once I have the strength to part with some of my favorite pieces that aren’t in my colors. At first, I was really bummed out by the shelves at the back of my closet. Once I placed my shoes on the shelves, everything felt off! But the moment I added these shoe boxes, I was inspired to make this part of my closet a display area (to the best of my ability, haha!)

I have to say, my childhood jewelry holder and utility cart from college have always been the most useful things in my closet. I love that they help me organize the ‘overflow’ of my closet and that they can be tucked away easily
